Our Petition
For people concerned about peak oil and other declining fossil fuels, petitioning local government to form a community task force is a good first step, for a couple of reasons:
- It has worked in other places. The City Council of Portland, Oregon, passed a resolution forming a Peak Oil Task Force after a number of concern citizens circulated a petition. We can do the same here.
- We need a community-wide response. In the words of the Portland Peak Oil Task Force's initial report, "Every day, businesses, government agencies and households around the world plan and make decisions based on the assumption that oil and natural gas will remain plentiful and affordable." They go on to recommend: "Act big, act now." We're not just talking about a few people switching to hybrid cars, here — we need to get seriously coordinated.

We petition the Walla Walla City Council to establish a community-wide task force to formulate a sustainability plan for Walla Walla to ensure the ability of all sectors of our community to adapt and thrive in a world of rapidly changing conditions, including climate change, rising costs and instability of fossil fuels, and related challenges. We further urge Walla Walla County, the City of College Place, the Port of Walla Walla, our schools, other public and private institutions, and our fellow citizens to participate in mutual planning for a sustainable future for our community and region.
